Two memorials on
Tuesday, Dec. 14 Two memorials will be held on Tuesday, December 14, to remember homeless people who died on the streets of Toronto and also low-income tenants who died in the tragic Rupert Hotel fire. REMEMBER THE RUPERT HOTEL: Two days before Christmas, December 23, 1989, a spectacular fire roared through a rooming house called 'the Rupert Hotel' at the corner of Queen and Parliament in Toronto. Ten people died. Many others were left homeless. Members of the Rupert Coalition, housing advocates and friends will gather at the site of the former Rupert Hotel in downtown Toronto's east end on Tuesday, December 14, at 11 a.m. for the 15th annual memorial for the ten who died in this tragedy and to demand government action on safe, affordable housing. REMEMBER THE HOMELESS: A homeless man who died on Toronto’s streets, but has not yet been identified, will be remembered at the monthly vigil at 12 noon on Tuesday, December 14, at the Church of the Holy Trinity (behind the Eaton Centre at Dundas and Yonge). The monthly memorial, co-sponsored by the Church of the Holy Trinity and the Toronto Disaster Relief Committee, will include a vigil, poetry and a meal for the homeless. More than 20 “Jane / John Does” are included among the 70 names added to the Toronto homeless memorial over the past two years. For more information, contact TDRC at tdrc@tdrc.net -30- |
