(Toronto)
Former residents of Toronto’s TENT CITY will be meeting to have a Christmas turkey meal and speak out. The former Tent City residents have been housed in apartments through a pilot rent supplement program, and they would like other homeless people to benefit from the same type of program which has allowed them to move into housing.

It has been awhile since they faced the cold winds off Toronto’s lakeshore. Their lives this Christmas are very different. The pilot project rent supplement program ensures that they spend only 30% of their income on rent.

Meanwhile, Toronto’s shelters are overcrowded, another case of tuberculosis (TB) has emerged in the shelter system, and people are encamped outside in various locations throughout the city in similar circumstances to the former Tent City. One thousand new emergency rent supplements could quickly house people and save their health and lives.
