STOP THE WAR ON THE POOR.  TWO MORE MEN DEAD.  ONE FROZEN, ONE BURNED.  LET’S END WAR.

Text Box: Press Conference: February 26th at 2pm outside City Hall

The Toronto Disaster Relief Committee (TDRC) will be delivering the burnt-out mattress on which a homeless man was burned beyond recognition last week.  The event will not only call on the City to open a new 200-bed safe shelter but will announce an anti-war rally to open the Armouries for peaceful purposes -- ie. to shelter and house people.

"It's ironic that while homeless people die in the streets and are crowded into unsafe shelter that the Armouries remain virtually unused and the City refuses to call on the federal government to use them for shelter and housing.  At the same time the Federal government is moving stealthily towards war.  At incredible expense the Canadian destroyer, the HMCS Iroquois, is making its way to the Persian Gulf.  The cost of this operation and the ship would house many, many homeless people in Canada," says Beric German of the TDRC.

The TDRC feels that an appropriate response to the recent deaths should be a call for all levels of government to end the war on the poor and on other peoples of the world.
