Province Holds Up Pope Squat Conversion to Affordable Housing

On Friday August 2, Toronto City Council passed a motion requesting that the Province formally transfer the property at 1510 King St. West, now known as the Pope Squat, to the City for conversion to affordable housing. A broad delegation is prepared to meet with the City to begin the process.

On Day 14 of the Pope Squat, a press conference will be held on Wednesday August 7 at 11 am in the Queen’s Park media room to call on the province to transfer the land and cease to be an impediment for the construction of affordable housing.

NDP Housing Critic Michael Prue; John Cartwright, President of the Toronto and York District Labour Council; Steve Watson, National Representative of the Canadian Auto Workers Union; and Street Nurse Cathy Crowe will speak to the desperate need for provincial action to cut through the red tape and turn 1510 King St. West over to the city.  On hand for comment as well will be squatters to speak to their involvement in the fight for the Pope Squat.
