A celebration in Black and White to End Homelessness

This Saturday March 2, the Canadian Auto Workers Union Local 112 and the Toronto and York Region Labour Council (TYLC) will be hosting “A Celebration in Black and White to End Homelessness.”  This celebration will raise funds to continue the work of the Toronto Disaster Relief Committee and their advocacy work for emergency relief for the homeless as well as for a national affordable housing strategy.

The event will feature a powerful black and white photo exhibit portraying the homelessness disaster and resistance. Christopher Bognat, a member of CAW Local 112, first made this exhibit as a project in the CAW Paid Education Leave Program.

“We hope that the exhibit can now serve as a tool to build the movement to end the homeless crisis,” says Bognat.  “We promise no one will leave the evening untouched by the experience. And at the same time, the event will also be a celebration.”

At 8pm, there will be brief presentations by confirmed speakers including City Councillor David Miler, street nurse Cathy Crowe, Tent City resident Rainer Driemeyer “DRI” and others. Christopher Bognat, the artist, will also speak to how and why he made this photographic portrayal of the issue. The MC for the celebration will be John Kennedy, CAW Local 112 president.

CAW Local 112 is an amalgamated local union comprising aerospace, manufacturing, and other workers in the Toronto area.
